I'm almost fifty. It's weird to write that. Thinking about my life, or what's left of it, I realized that I've worked more than half my years in some sort of office environment. I hate offices. I worked in offices before cubicals were even a spark in their inventor's mind. I used an electric typewriter to type the letters my boss wanted me to send out. Computers, or word processors for that matter, were for the Jetsons. I remember carbon paper and what a pain it was to make a typo. How many of you remember those little round erasers on a wheel with the black bristle brush on the other end? Also, how many of you learned to swear like a sea cook because your three sheets of onion skin carbons were ripped into shreds while erasing said typos using those ancient office artifacts?
But, needless to say, I needed those jobs to survive; pay the rent, eat, play. I also hated every minute of them. That's why I'm going to do what I love best for the next fifty years that, God-willing, remain of my life. I'm going to write. I'm going to write my heart out and hope there's someone out there who wants to read what my somewhat odd and imaginative mind spews forth. I'm going to write ghost stories, because I love to read them. I love true crime too but, yikes, could never write about it. So, if you like ghost stories, or things that go bump in the night, keep an eye out for my book Those Who Wait, coming soon from Devine Destinies. A love story, with some paranormal thrown in. I'll let you know when it's ready.

- I think a storm is heading in. Yes, did you hear that rumble of low, ominous thunder? It puts me in the mood for some hot tea; would you care to join me? I hope you don't mind antique, chipped cups. Here, let me give you a few homemade, chocolate chip cookies also and we'll watch the rain come in from my living room. Yes, this couch is old and it is stuffed with feathers. How observant of you. Wow, that was a close one, it shook the house. I'm going to light a candle in case the lights go out. It smells like lilacs and settles the nerves. Curling up with a book and getting lost in a romance sounds like a good idea, if only for a little while. Would you like a book too? Here, take this one. It's called Those Who Wait. It's a ghost story I wrote and perfect for the occasion, wouldn't you say? Of course, you can cover up with my grandmother's quilt, don't be silly. The storms are bringing in a bit of a chill. It's all about being cozy and warm. Oh, yes, as far as the creaks you hear, it's simply my old house settling. Or, so I tell myself when I'm all alone.
Hi Lynn, I love what you wrote about a new career. I'm almost 50 too (46 next birthday!) but don't feel any different to when I was 17. Where did the intervening years go - our twenties and thirties? Gone like a flash in a storm! Anyway, I worked as a secretary too, tying meaningless letters on an old electric typewriter ... other people's words! Then editing, again other people's words or writing for newspapers ... again, other people's stories! Here's to everyone being able to write their own stories! Felicity
